Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy drama television series developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.
The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It started on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and finished on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes shown across eight seasons.
Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.
The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.
Game of Thrones – Season 1 – Trailer
The plot is set in a fantasy universe, mostly on the continent Westeros, with one storyline taking place on Essos, a region to the east. The season, like the novel, begins with nobleman Eddard “Ned” Stark, the Warden of the North, who is requested to become the King’s Hand (chief counsellor) to his lifelong friend, King Robert Baratheon.
Ned is on the hunt for the killer of his predecessor, Jon Arryn. He unearths horrible truths about the powerful Lannister family, including Robert’s queen, Cersei, that his predecessor died attempting to reveal. Following Robert’s death, Ned is arrested for treason. Robb, Ned’s eldest son, leads a rebellion against the Lannisters.
Ned is assassinated by Cersei’s ruthless adolescent son, King Joffrey Baratheon. Meanwhile, in Essos, the exiled son of the previous king, Viserys Targaryen, compels his sister Daenerys to marry a Dothraki warrior in return for an army to pursue his claim to the Iron Throne. Viserys dies at the conclusion of the season, and Daenerys becomes the Mother of Dragons.

The plot is set in a fantasy universe, mostly on the fictitious continent of Westeros, with one storyline taking place on Essos, a region to the east. The season, like the novel, recounts the aftermath of Eddard “Ned” Stark’s tragic death and the political instability that ensues.
The War of the Five Kings, fought between the leaders of Westerosi groups vying for the Iron Throne or seeking independence from it, dominates the season. Cersei Lannister, widow of the late King Robert Baratheon, reigns as queen regent in the capital, while her son Joffrey governs as King of the Seven Kingdoms.
Jaime Lannister, Cersei’s twin brother, is Robb Stark’s prisoner, while her other brother, the dwarf Tyrion, serves as Acting Hand of the King to Joffrey until their father, Tywin Lannister, comes to assist defend the city. During an expedition beyond the Wall, Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch stay with a hesitant ally in the North.
Meanwhile, in Essos, Daenerys Targaryen searches for friends and resources to assist her achieve her imagined destiny of winning the Iron Throne, aided by three newborn dragons.

The plot is set in a fictitious universe, mostly on the continent of Westeros, with one storyline taking place on another continent to the east, Essos. The season, like the novel, continues the storyline of The War of the Five Kings: following the death of Renly Baratheon, all four kings in Westeros believe they have a claim to the Iron Throne, with the exception of Robb Stark, who seeks vengeance for the death of his father, Ned Stark, and Northern independence.
Daenerys Targaryen begins her rise to power in Essos; Ned’s illegitimate son, Jon Snow, goes undercover beyond the Wall; the other Stark children struggle to survive across Westeros, but Robb is killed; Jaime Lannister returns to the capital; and the reawakened threat of the Army of the Dead is announced to all of Westeros.
