Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.
The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.

Game of Thrones – Season 2 – Summary
The War of the Five Kings intensifies as multiple claimants fight for the Iron Throne. Joffrey Baratheon rules in King’s Landing with Lannister support, while his uncles Renly and Stannis Baratheon each declare themselves king. Robb Stark, hailed as King in the North, wages war against the Lannisters, and Balon Greyjoy seizes the opportunity to rebel and attack the North. Alliances shift as battles and betrayals unfold across Westeros.
Arya Stark, still disguised as a boy, is captured and taken to Harrenhal. She serves as Tywin Lannister’s cupbearer, listening to war strategies while secretly plotting her escape. With the help of Jaqen H’ghar, a Faceless Man, she eliminates her enemies one by one before finally fleeing with Gendry and Hot Pie. Her journey remains dangerous as she heads toward an uncertain fate.
Tyrion Lannister, acting as Hand of the King, works to outsmart his sister Cersei and prepare King’s Landing for war. He strengthens the city’s defenses, uncovers Cersei’s spies, and sends Princess Myrcella to Dorne for safety. His clever use of wildfire proves crucial in the Battle of Blackwater, though his efforts go unrecognized after Tywin takes credit for the victory.
Stannis Baratheon, influenced by Melisandre’s dark magic, launches an assault on King’s Landing. His fleet is devastated by Tyrion’s wildfire trap, and the tide turns when Tywin and the Tyrells arrive as reinforcements. Defeated, Stannis retreats to Dragonstone, his forces weakened but his ambition unbroken.
Theon Greyjoy’s betrayal reaches its peak when he seizes Winterfell, executing Ser Rodrik Cassel and claiming to have killed Bran and Rickon. His arrogance leads to his downfall as his own men turn against him. Winterfell is left in ruins, but Bran and Rickon survive, escaping with Osha and Hodor toward the Wall.
Beyond the Wall, Jon Snow accompanies the Night’s Watch on a mission to track wildlings. He encounters Ygritte, who challenges his loyalty to the Watch. To infiltrate Mance Rayder’s army, Jon kills Qhorin Halfhand, though his true allegiance remains uncertain.
Daenerys Targaryen arrives in Qarth seeking aid for her quest to reclaim the Iron Throne. The city’s rulers mock her until her dragons are stolen. She enters the House of the Undying, where visions of the future tempt her. Reunited with her dragons, she burns the warlocks and departs Qarth, more determined than ever to build an army.
Bran Stark’s dreams grow stronger, guiding him toward the three-eyed raven. After Winterfell’s fall, he and his companions journey north, pursued by danger. Meanwhile, in the season’s final moments, a massive army of white walkers marches toward the Wall, signaling the true threat looming over Westeros.
