Narcos is an American criminal drama television series developed and produced by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro. Seasons 1 and 2 are set and filmed in Colombia, and are based on the narrative of Colombian narcoterrorist and drug lord Pablo Escobar, head of the Medellín Cartel and millionaire via cocaine manufacturing and trafficking.
The series also follows Escobar’s encounters with drug lords, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officers, and other resistance groups. Season 3 begins up after Escobar’s death and follows the DEA as they attempt to stop the growth of the deadly Cali Cartel.
Narcos – TV Series – Season 1 – Summary
Season 1 follows Pablo Escobar’s life from the late 1970s, when he initially began producing cocaine, until July 1992. The program is presented from the perspective of Steve Murphy, an American DEA agent stationed in Colombia. The series chronicles Escobar’s early involvement in the cocaine trafficking in Colombia.
Escobar was a black marketeer in Medellín, transporting illegal goods such as alcohol, cigarettes, and household appliances into Colombia. He was introduced to Mateo “Cockroach” Moreno, a Chilean exile and underground chemist, who proposed collaborating to produce and distribute cocaine.
They go beyond Moreno’s little cocaine processing lab by constructing larger labs in the jungle and, with the assistance of Carlos Lehder, transport their product in bulk to Miami, where it acquires popularity among the wealthy and famous. Pablo soon establishes larger facilities and more extensive distribution networks into the United States to meet rising demand.
With cocaine’s rise to prominence in the American market, accounting for a significant flow of funds to Colombia, and growing drug-related violence in the United States, the Americans dispatched a DEA task team to Colombia to combat the problem. Murphy has teamed with Javier Peña.
The goal of Murphy’s task team is to collaborate with Colombian authorities, commanded by Colonel Carrillo, to stop the flow of cocaine into the United States. The season concludes with Escobar’s escape from jail.
