Stranger Things is a television series developed by the Duffer Brothers, who also act as showrunners and executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The first season, produced by Monkey Massacre Productions and Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment, was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The season’s second, third, and fourth seasons began in October 2017, July 2019, and May and July 2022, respectively. It was revived for a fifth and final season in February 2022.
Stranger Things is set in the 1980s in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana. The neighboring Hawkins National Laboratory purportedly conducts scientific research for the US Department of Energy but covertly conducts paranormal and supernatural tests, occasionally on human test subjects. They have unwittingly opened a gateway to an other reality known as the Upside Down, the existence of which begins to have disastrous consequences for the citizens of Hawkins.
The second season begins in October 1984, a year later. Will has been rescued, but he begins to see visions of Hawkins’ fall, which was caused by a monster in the Upside Down. When it is revealed that Will is still being possessed by a creature from the Upside Down, his friends and family realize that their world is under attack.
Stranger Things – Season 2 – Summary
Season 2 of “Stranger Things” picks up one year after the events of the first season, in the fall of 1984. The residents of Hawkins, Indiana, are trying to return to normalcy after the Demogorgon incident, but things are far from ordinary.
Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is still recovering from his time in the Upside Down and experiences troubling visions of a new, larger creature known as the Mind Flayer. As Halloween approaches, a series of supernatural events begin to unfold once again.
A new girl named Maxine “Max” Mayfield (Sadie Sink) moves to Hawkins and becomes friends with the group of kids, particularly Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin). However, her arrival also brings tension, especially when her brother, Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery), becomes a source of trouble for some of the kids.
Meanwhile, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is revealed to be alive and has been secretly living with police chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) in a secluded cabin. She longs to reunite with Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), but Hopper is determined to keep her safe from the Hawkins National Laboratory and its dangerous experiments.
As the season progresses, it becomes clear that the Mind Flayer is attempting to break into the real world from the Upside Down. Strange occurrences and supernatural incidents begin to intensify in Hawkins once more, affecting the town’s residents.
Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) starts dating Bob Newby (Sean Astin), a kind and supportive man who works at the local RadioShack. However, they face their own challenges as they get caught up in the supernatural events.
Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) continue to investigate the Hawkins Lab and its wrongdoings. Their actions lead them to uncover more information about the lab’s activities and the government’s role in covering up the strange happenings.
The group of kids, along with Eleven, come together to fight the Mind Flayer and the creatures it sends into their world, known as Demo-dogs. They also team up with Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), who has transformed from a former popular boy to a more caring and protective figure.
Eventually, it is revealed that the Hawkins Lab has been conducting experiments on Eleven and other children with special abilities, attempting to harness their powers for military purposes. Eleven learns more about her past, including her real name, Jane Ives, and her connection to Terry Ives (Aimee Mullins), her mother.
In the final showdown, the group manages to close the gate that connects the Upside Down to Hawkins, effectively sealing off the Mind Flayer’s access to their world. However, in the process, Eleven seemingly sacrifices herself to save her friends, vanishing along with the Demogorgon-like creature.
The season ends on a hopeful note as the characters are seen trying to return to normalcy, but a scene during the credits reveals that the Mind Flayer might still be lurking in the Upside Down, hinting at future threats to come in Hawkins.
Overall, Season 2 delves deeper into the supernatural mysteries of Hawkins, expands the group of characters, and further explores the emotional and personal challenges faced by the residents as they confront the unknown and fight against sinister forces.
