Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy drama television series developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.

The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It started on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and finished on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes shown across eight seasons.

Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.

The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.

Game of Thrones – Season 5 – Summary

Daenerys rules Meereen but faces rebellion from the Sons of the Harpy, forcing her to reopen the fighting pits to appease the nobles. She marries Hizdahr zo Loraq for peace but flees on Drogon after an attack, leaving Tyrion and Jorah to govern in her absence.

In King’s Landing, Cersei empowers the Faith Militant to weaken the Tyrells, but she is later imprisoned by the High Sparrow and forced into a humiliating walk of atonement. Margaery and Loras are also arrested, leaving Tommen powerless.

Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and makes an uneasy alliance with the wildlings, angering many brothers. After leading a rescue mission to Hardhome, where White Walkers attack, he is betrayed and stabbed by his own men.

Arya trains with the Faceless Men in Braavos but struggles to abandon her identity. After disobeying orders and killing Ser Meryn Trant, she is blinded as punishment.

Sansa is manipulated by Littlefinger into marrying Ramsay Bolton, suffering horrific abuse. Theon, broken as Reek, eventually helps her escape. Brienne searches for Sansa but fails to protect her.

Stannis marches on Winterfell but is defeated after Melisandre sacrifices Shireen to the Lord of Light, causing his army to desert him. He is killed by Brienne, seeking vengeance for Renly.

In Dorne, Jaime and Bronn attempt to rescue Myrcella but fail. Ellaria Sand poisons Myrcella in revenge for Oberyn’s death, despite Doran Martell’s attempts to keep peace.

Tyrion, captured by Jorah, travels to Meereen and advises Daenerys’ council. Jorah, exiled again, fights in the pits to prove his loyalty.

Bran remains with the Three-Eyed Raven, learning to harness his greensight abilities.

The season ends with Jon Snow’s apparent death, Daenerys surrounded by Dothraki, and Cersei left broken but vengeful.
